The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory

While Brian Greene tries hard to aim this book at the neophyte, avoiding the intricacies of the mathematics for as long as possible. When one speaks of superstring theory, it is difficult to not end up in an involved description of n dimensional geometry.
He does a wonderful job of setting up the problem that superstring theory purports to solve, but ultimately his presentation of the solution is perhaps not as elegant, nor as universally comprehensible as he would like. Still worth the read though if you're willing to suffer through the handwaving at complicated maths.
